As a pediatrician working in the prestigious Sarji Maternal and child hospital and serving the Shivamogga community, I very well understand the importance of addressing health concerns that resonate with local families.
Let’s explore a key topic relevant to our region:
Lifestyle Diseases in Children: A Growing Concern in Shivamogga
In recent years, there’s been a noticeable increase in lifestyle-related health issues among children in Karnataka, including Shivamogga.
Did you know that even our little ones are facing health challenges that were once considered "adult problems"?
We're talking about lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure…!
Local research indicates that the prevalence of overweight and obesity among school-going children in North Karnataka cities is approximately 6.5%..! This trend is concerning, as childhood obesity further leads to health complications like type 2 diabetes(Sugar disease) and hypertension(high BP)
Here in Shivamogga, with our changing lifestyles (A marked shift from traditional home-cooked meals to processed and fast foods high in sugars and unhealthy fats) we're seeing a worrying trend. Our children are spending more time indoors, glued to screens, and indulging in packaged snacks and sugary drinks. This, combined with a decline in physical activity, is paving the way for these very worrying health issues.
What simple things can we do?
Embrace the outdoors: Shivamogga is blessed with beautiful landscapes! Let's encourage our children to explore – trek up Kudremukh, cycle along the Tunga River, or simply play in the park.
Rediscover traditional foods: Let's replace processed snacks with nutritious options like ragi balls, millet flour rotis, and seasonal fruits. Our local markets are brimming with fresh, healthy produce.
Limit screen time: It's tough, I know. But let's set realistic limits on TV, smartphones, and tablets.
Lead by example: Children learn by observing. Let's prioritize our own health and fitness.
Let's work together to create a healthier future for our children.
